Kurtz Bros.

Transforming Kurtz Bros’ bulk goods ordering with a custom BigCommerce checkout and NetSuite-Integrated shipping solution

Kurtz Bros.

Background

Kurtz Bros is a major Ohio-based supplier of high-quality landscaping materials, specialising in nutrient-rich topsoil, compost, gravel, stone and mulch for residential and commercial projects, as well as gardening tools, landscaping accessories, and lawn care products. Humbly begun as a family business in 1948 when Cleveland farmer Mel Kurtz started selling topsoil to passers-by, it has expanded to service much of Northern and Eastern Ohio, providing products to dozens of industrial sectors, homeowners, companies, communities, and agencies.

The Challenge

Seeking to continue its growth, Kurtz Bros sought to upgrade and overhaul its digital infrastructure by building a BigCommerce-based web platform to accommodate both B2C and B2B customers.

However, they faced a complex logistical hurdle: standard eCommerce checkouts are built for simple parcel shipping, not the nuanced shipping of bulk landscaping materials, specialised fleet management, and localised delivery scheduling. Kurtz Bros was handling all shipping internally with a large fleet of varied truck types, some suited only for certain products, and operating out of a variety of store and production facilities with pre-booked delivery windows.

The online checkout thus needed to accurately replicate a highly constrained, real-world delivery booking process:

  • Customers require the ability to reserve precise delivery dates and time windows, or place orders for exact-date pickup.
  • Truck-type assignments depend heavily on whether products are sold in bulk (by the cubic yard) or packaged/palletised.
  • Incompatible bulk products (e.g., mixing red soil with brown soil) cannot be combined in the same truck bed.
  • Certain trucks have strict cargo limits (e.g. a walking floor truck can ship mulch but not soil).
  • Available delivery dates must dynamically account for operational blackout dates, local site closures, and real-time truck capacity.
  • Certain B2B customers already have pre-quoted shipping methods and routes for orders they’re placing online

The Solution

To translate this complex logistical system into a seamless eCommerce experience, MyIntegrator partnered with Snapshot Design (developer of the integrated storefront) to build a highly tailored bulk shipping and checkout solution for the new Kurtz Bros. BigCommerce B2B Edition website. Rather than forcing bulk delivery requirements into a standard eCommerce flow, the project re-engineered the checkout to reflect the real-world operational complexity of Kurtz Bros.
At the front end, a custom checkout—built on BigCommerce’s Optimized One-Page Checkout—guides customers through their choice of delivery or pickup, precise store location, date selection, and preferred time window. This experience dynamically responds to live operational rules, displaying only valid delivery dates, available time slots, and fulfillment methods based on real-time truck capacity, blackout dates, and dispatch logic. For B2B customers, the platform accommodates seamless, invoice-based payment workflows without disrupting the ordering process.

Behind the scenes, we developed a specialized BigCommerce shipping provider that interfaces directly with Kurtz Bros’ NetSuite ERP, the ultimate source of truth for cartage rules, physical site locations, and vehicle availability. This powerful engine evaluates cart contents, addresses, quote-based promotions, and product constraints in real time. It intelligently separates bulk from palletised items, prevents incompatible bulk products from mixing, ensures heavy loads are assigned to valid truck types, and calculates exact delivery options based on actual operational realities.

This custom BigCommerce B2B checkout ultimately guides customers through two distinct fulfillment pathways:

  • Store Pickup:Customers easily select their preferred physical branch location.
  • Local Delivery: Rather than displaying static shipping timelines, a dynamic booking calendar prompts customers to reserve an exact delivery date and time window (e.g., morning or afternoon). This calendar reacts to real-world constraints, locking out operational blackout dates or days when the required truck type is already fully booked.

The integration also successfully brought bespoke B2B rules online. Shipping quotes stored in NetSuite are synchronized directly into the checkout, ensuring Kurtz Bros. customers instantly receive their previously negotiated shipping rates for specific products and destinations.

The Result

MyIntegrator has transformed Kurtz Bros’ B2B checkout into a powerful bulk logistics platform with an integrated shipping engine. Every time a customer reaches checkout, this engine evaluates their basket in real-time against Kurtz Bros’ strict logistical rules:

  • It intelligently groups items by physical requirements, ensuring incompatible bulk products aren’t mixed and palletised goods are routed to properly equipped vehicles.
  • Based on the customer’s location and product availability, the system precisely determines the optimal starting facility (whether a retail store or a mass production yard) and evaluates local fleet capacity.
  • Residential buyers are automatically presented with the single most cost-effective consolidated delivery plan, while commercial buyers are offered greater logistical flexibility to accommodate onsite trucking preferences.

The end result is a seamless, custom checkout experience that eliminates manual booking errors and optimises fulfilment routing for heavy, bulky materials. This targeted logistics solution allows Kurtz Bros to confidently scale their online sales, knowing that every single accepted order perfectly adheres to the physical realities of their everyday operations.
